a poets cypher
Saturday, February 22, 2025, 5–7pmFree RSVP here.
For the inaugural program, BlackMass Publishing is launching a dynamic and innovative poet cypher that draws inspiration from both the rap cypher and the spontaneous nature of free jazz. In this unique format, attendees will gather in a circle and engage in an improvisational spoken word exchange, creating a fluid and collaborative space for creative expression. Each participant is invited to share their poetry in a free-flowing manner, contributing to the collective energy of the cypher.
This performance will be documented by artists, Morian Mikhail and David Williams, to be included in a collaborative piece between us and the filmmakers. In addition to the cypher, a special feature of the program will be the on-site library, which serves as both a repository and a stage for literary expression. This library will welcome contributions of written works and poems, which can be dropped off by attendees and remain in the collection for the duration of the residency. This initiative not only fosters a sense of community but also builds a living archive of voices that reflect the diverse perspectives present throughout the program. This concept serves as a multifaceted cultural exchange—blending performance, community engagement, and the preservation of spoken word traditions—creating an environment that is both intellectually and creatively stimulating. By providing an open platform for improvisation and a space for literary exchange, BlackMass Publishing invites participants to explore and celebrate the power of poetry in a collaborative, organic, and ever-evolving manner.
